CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Head coach Joe Breschi's first University of North Carolina men's lacrosse season will begin with five straight home games with the Tar Heels playing a minimum of nine games at Fetzer Field in 2009. North Carolina will host the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament for the first time since 2004 to end the regular season. The complete schedule was announced Thursday by Coach Breschi and the UNC Athletic Department.
Nine of Carolina's 13 regular-season games will be played against teams that participated in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Three of those opponents -- Duke, Virginia and Johns Hopkins -- all played in the men's lacrosse final four weekend last Memorial Day in Foxboro, Mass. The other 2008 NCAA Tournament teams on the Tar Heel schedule include Denver, Navy, Colgate, Notre Dame, Maryland and Ohio State.
Carolina will play its first five matches at home, beginning with the earliest ever game in Tar Heel history on February 7 against Robert Morris at Noon at Fetzer Field. Successive home encounters will follow with Denver, Navy, Colgate and Detroit Mercy before the Tar Heels hit the road to play at Notre Dame March 7.
The Tar Heels will have three more home games in March including their ACC opener against Duke March 14. UNC will conclude its regular-season home schedule before March ends with a home game against Johns Hopkins on March 28.
North Carolina will play neutral site games in April against Virginia and against Breschi's old school, Ohio State, where he coached from 1997-2008. The OSU contest will be played in Baltimore April 11 before the Heels travel to Hofstra on April 18.
The regular-season ends with UNC hosting the ACC Tournament for only the third time since 1995 and the first since time since 2004. The ACC semifinals will be at Fetzer Field the evening of April 24 and the championship will be contested at Fetzer Field on the afternoon of April 26.
