RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior forward Casey Nogueira exploded for four goals Friday night, the most by a Tar Heel player in over five years, as the North Carolina women's soccer team defeated NC State 5-0 at Method Road Soccer Stadium. Nogueira's four goals move her into a tie for second place for the most tallies in the nation this season as she has 17, only one behind Michigan State freshman Laura Heyboer who has 18.
Nogueira has now scored 11 goals in the past six matches, all against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. Her four goals gave her a second hat trick this season (also versus Wake Forest October 5) and the third of her career. The four goals are the most by a Tar Heel in a match since October 14, 2003 when Lindsay Tarpley tallied four goals in a 6-0 win over Wake Forest at Fetzer Field.
North Carolina (14-1-1 overall, 7-0 in the ACC) has now scored at least three goals in each of its seven ACC games. The five goals give the Tar Heels 58 goals on the season, two more than it scored in the entirety of the 2007 season in 24 games.
Carolina broke open the game by scoring four goals in a span of 10:22 in the first half. Nogueira opened the scoring with her 14th goal of the season at 17:05 off an assist by sophomore forward Jessica McDonald. Nogueira took a pass from McDonald and one-touched the ball into the lower left corner from 15 yards out.
It took just 4:36 for the Tar Heels to double their lead to 2-0. Yael Averbuch took a free kick deep in the corner of the field that was headed on by Jessica McDonald to senior midfielder Allie Long who punched in her shot for her fourth goal of the season.
Nogueira went on to score twice in a span of 59 seconds just a few minutes later. At 26:28, Nogueira scored an unassisted goal, her 15th of the year, on a blast from 20 yards out into the lower right corner. Less than a minute later, Nogueira scored in almost an identical fashion as she took a couple of dribbles to her left to eldue a defender and then blasted a shot into the lower right corner from the top of the box.
The Tar Heels finished off the scoring in the opening two minutes of the second half as Courtney Jones struck a shot that was saved by Kim Kern. Nogueira pounced on the rebound to score into the empty net at 46:33.
Carolina took 27 shots, including 21 on frame, in comparison to three for the Wolfpack (8-8, ACC 0-6). Rachel Barnette and Kim Kern split the 90 minutes in goal for NC State with each making eight saves. Three Tar Heel goalkeepers played - Ashlyn Harris, Anna Rodenbough and Amanda Tucker - with each making one save.
The Tar Heels will take seven days off before traveling to play No. 12-ranked Virginia next Friday at 7 p.m. at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.
