Billy Bitter scored eight goals to tie the school record and lead the men's lacrosse team to an NCAA Tournament first round win and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for May 4-10, 2009.
A sophomore attackman from Stowe, Vt., Bitter helped UNC defeat UMBC 15-13. itter scored his eight goals on only nine shots, missing on only his final attempt of the game when his shot into an empty net was deflected by a defenseman. He also had an assist in the game to give him a career high for points in a game with nine. He fell only one goal short of the record of nine goals in an NCAA Tournament game which has been accomplished twice. He is just the third Tar Heel to ever score eight goals in a match. Bitter has 46 goals this season, one short of the UNC school record held by Dennis Goldstein (1991). Bitter's 69 points are the third most in a season in Tar Heel history behind only the 81 of Bruce Ledwith in 1973 and Goldstein's 75 in 1991.
