Tar Heel Women Send Two Swimmers To Finals Of The 2010 NCAA Champsionships

CHAPEL HILL, NC - Laura Moriarty and Carly Smith qualified for Friday night finals after the second prelim session of the 2010 NCAA Division-I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The 200-yard medley relay was the first event of the morning and Carolina finished 15th in a time of 1:39.43. Carly Smith swam the backstroke leg in a time of 24.96, followed by Layne Brodie who swam the breaststroke leg in a time of 28.08. Sarah Tanner swam the butterfly leg in a time of 24.53 and the relay was anchored by freestyler Rebecca Kane in a time of 21.86.
Junior Laura Moriarty finished the 400-yard individual medley in ninth place in a time of 4:09.99 qualifying for the consolation heat of this event.
Freshman Katie Nolan swam the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 53.47 finishing in 24th place. Sophomore Sarah Tanner also competed in this event touching in a time of 55.54.
Junior Katura Harvey touched in the 200-yard freestyle in a season best time of 1:47.27.
Laura Moriarty swam her second event of the morning in the 100-yard breaststroke finishing in a time of 1:01.64. Teammate Layne Brodie competed in the event touching in a time of 1:01.79.
Carly Smith competed in the 100-yard backstroke touching in 12th with a time of 52.76 and qualifying for the consolation heat.
Finals will begin at 7 p.m. Friday night.
