ChAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Laura Moriarty earned first-team All-America honors Saturday night in the 200-yard breaststroke as the University of North Carolina finished 20th in the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Boilermaker Aquatics Center at Purdue University. Freshman Carly Smith also earned her second Top 15 individual finish of the meet in the 200-yard backstroke.
Carolina ended the meet in 20th place as a team with 42 points.
Sophomore Laura Moriarty competed in the championship final of the 200-yard breaststroke finishing in eighth place with a time of 2:10.82, but she went a career best time of 2:09.60 in the preliminaries Saturday. Moriarty broke both her previous school and ACC record of 2:09.94 set at the ACC Championships.
"Laura had a fabulous swim in the morning. She swam very tough and confidently putting herself in a great position for her night swim," said head coach Rich DeSelm. "She gained tremendous experience and represented the university well."
Katura Harvey swam the 1650-yard freestyle Saturday, finishing in a time of 16:25.43.
Carly Smith competed in the consolation heat of the 200-yard backstroke and finished in 15th place in a time of 1:55.22.

Layne Brodie joined teammate Laura Moriarty in the 200-yard breaststroke and finished in 17th place with a time of 2:11.75 in the prelim session of the event.
"Overall, we had more individual swims and more All-America honors this year compared to last year," said DeSelm. "Those who competed this year will be a great influence on the rest of the team to try to get a bigger and better group back to NCAAs next season. I feel really good about our season and the results. I think this is positive momentum and I am very proud of our group."
Six of seven swimmers merited either first-team or honorable mention All-America honors. Moriarty earned first-team hnors in the 200 breaststroke and was honorable mention in the 400 IM. Carly Smith was an honorable mention choice in the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Two relays -- the 200 free relay (Rebecca Kane, Katie Nolan, Layne Brodie and Sarah Tanner) and the 200 medley relay (Smith, Brodie, Nolan and Kane) were tapped for honorable mention honors.
