WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team beat Villanova 7-1 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Vonnie Gros Classic to improve to 4-0 on the season. The Wildcats' goal, which came on a penalty corner in the 57th minute of play, was the first that Carolina has allowed this season.
Sophomore Caitlin Van Sickle scored twice for UNC, and the Tar Heels got one goal each from junior Meghan Dawson, senior Elizabeth Drazdowski, sophomore Kelsey Kolojejchick, senior Jen Slocum and sophomore Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany.
Dawson had the gamewinner in the 10th minute of play on a penalty corner, assisted by sophomores Teryn Brill and Katie Ardrey. Less than three minutes later, the two again assisted on a penalty corner goal, this one by Van Sickle, to put UNC up 2-0. Drazdowski's unassisted goal in the 23rd minute made the score 3-0. Nine seconds before halftime, UNC was awarded its first penalty stroke of the season, and Kolojejchick connected to put the Tar Heels up 4-0 at the break.
Slocum scored five minutes into the second half on an assist by junior Taryn Gjurich. Trailing 5-0, Villanova did what no team has been able to do this season when Dana Ramsden sent a penalty corner strike past UNC goalkeeper Jackie Kintzer in the 57th minute of play to make the score 5-1.
UNC closed with goals by Van Sickle, assisted by freshman Marta Malmberg, and Gaudioso Radvany, unassisted, in the 58th minute.
The Tar Heels return to action on Sunday with a noon game against the host West Chester Golden Rams. Carolina coach Karen Shelton is a West Chester alum and her coach, Vonnie Gros, is the tournament's namesake.
