CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Jen Slocum scored the gamewinner in the 61st minute and the North Carolina field hockey team stayed undefeated by winning its closest game of the season, 3-1 over Old Dominion Friday evening at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Prior to Friday's game, the smallest margin of victory for No. 1 UNC (6-0) had been three points. Old Dominion fell to 1-6 on the season, with all of its games against teams ranked No. 18 or higher.
"It was a very hard-fought game by both teams, a typical North Carolina-Old Dominion battle," said UNC coach Karen Shelton. "It's everything we expected, and we're delighted with the outcome. They made us think, they made us work and they made us fight. It was what we needed and I couldn't be prouder of the team for gutting it out and playing so well in the second half."
Carolina kicked off the scoring in the 13th minute, when sophomore Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany grabbed the rebound after an ODU save to put her team up 1-0 with her fifth goal of the season. The Lady Monarchs answered quickly, with sophomore Danielle Clutter deflecting in a ball from the left side on a penalty corner less than two minutes after UNC's goal.
The score remained knotted at 1-1 for nearly 46 minutes of play, until Slocum's rebound goal that put the Tar Heels up 2-1. They added another goal late, with sophomore Caitlin Van Sickle tipping in a ball from senior Elizabeth Drazdowski to make the final 3-1 with just over a minute to play.
UNC finished with 19 shots, 13 in the second half, to ODU's four. Carolina goalkeeper Jackie Kintzer had a second-half save, while ODU's Devon Seifert made nine, seven of them in the second half.
The Tar Heels play another home game on Sunday, hosting William & Mary for a 1 p.m. matchup at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
