WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Led by two goals each from sophomores Kelsey Kolojejchick and Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany, North Carolina picked up its second 7-1 win in a row Sunday, beating host West Chester in the Vonnie Gros Classic to improve to 5-0 on the season. The top-ranked Tar Heels topped Villanova Friday afternoon in the first game of the event by the same score.
The games marked a homecoming both for coach Karen Shelton, a West Chester graduate, and many of the players, 10 of whom hail from the state of Pennsylvania. "This weekend is always like a reunion of sorts," said Shelton, who has brought her team to the event in each of the last five years. "I enjoy coming back to West Chester, and Pennsylvania is the stomping grounds for a lot of our players, so we have a lot of fans at the games and the families don't have to travel very far. And we're proud to participate in an event that honors Vonnie Gros, my college coach."
In the 11th minute of play on Sunday, sophomore Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany tipped in a shot by freshman Marta Malmberg to put UNC up for good. Freshman Katie Shanahan then tallied her first career goal, connecting on a penalty stroke in the 20th minute to give Carolina a 2-0 lead.
In the 22nd minute, senior Elizabeth Drazdowski deflected in a shot by sophomore Caitlin Van Sickle on a penalty corner, one of eight by UNC in the first half. In the 29th minute, Kolojejchick scored the first of her two goals, this one unassisted.
After halftime, Gaudioso Radvany put in her second of the day, followed by Kolojejchick's second, which was assisted by Malmberg and put UNC up 6-0.
Golden Ram sophomore Alisha Moran, who played for the same high school - Crestwood, in Mountain Top, Pa. - as UNC's Drazdowski, put her team on the board in the 53rd minute, scoring on a breakaway. With five minutes on the clock the Tar Heels added one more, sophomore Katie Ardrey's first career goal, assisted by Drazdowski.
UNC finished the day with 27 shots, 19 of them in the first half.
"I thought we were very unselfish in the way we played both today and Friday," Shelton said. "I'm pleased with the way we continue to develop."
Next up for the Tar Heels is a pair of home games at Francis E. Henry Stadium. On Friday, UNC hosts traditional-rival Old Dominion for a 6 p.m. game. On Sunday another non-conference rival, William & Mary, visits for a 1 p.m. matchup.
Instead of heading back to Chapel Hill following the game, the team traveled to Washington, D.C., for a reception at the White House on Monday afternoon. The Tar Heels will join other 2009-10 NCAA Champions to be honored by President Barack Obama.
