FARMVILLE, Va. - Sophomore Kelsey Kolojejchick registered a hat trick and the North Carolina defense came up with its sixth shutout of the season as the second-ranked UNC field hockey team won 5-0 at Longwood Tuesday to improve to 10-0 on the year. The host Lancers fell to 2-8 with the loss.
Kolojejchick scored her first goal seven minutes into the game to give UNC all the offense it would need. Classmate Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany increased the lead five minutes later with her sixth goal of the season. Carolina's first two goals were scored from field, while the last three were on penalty corners.
The Tar Heels scored three times in a span of just over 11 minutes in the second half to pull away from Longwood. In the 45th minute, sophomore Caitlin Van Sickle took Katie Ardrey's push-out and got off a hard shot for her seventh goal of the year, which put UNC up 3-0. The last two goals, one in the 55th minute and another just over a minute later, were by Kolojejchick, on assists from freshman Marta Malmberg. Malmberg has a team-high 10 assists on the season, while Kolojejchick has leads the team with 11 goals.
UNC had 17 shots to two by Longwood. The Tar Heels totaled 12 penalty corners, while Longwood had three.
The Tar Heels' only save of the day was by Van Sickle, who registered her first defensive save of the season.
"It was nice to score some goals and I was happy with our defensive effort," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We're a work in progress, but we continue to grow and improve."
The game was Carolina's third in four days, following matchups with Duke last Saturday and Stanford last Sunday. Next up for the Tar Heels is an Atlantic Coast Conference home game against Wake Forest this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Henry Stadium.
