ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Behind two goals each from Elizabeth Stephens and Samantha Travers and one from Kelsey Kolojejchick, the No. 2 North Carolina field hockey team opened its 2011 season Saturday with a 5-0 win at No. 9 Michigan in the first game of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. In action at Ocker Field, the Tar Heels scored early, with Stephens' first goal coming on a corner in the fifth minute of play, and led 4-0 at the half.
Stephens, the team's vice-captain and a forward from St. Louis, scored the opener on a penalty corner, assisted by junior Katie Ardrey and senior Katelyn Falgowski. She then assisted on Travers' first goal, in the 19th minute. It was the first career score for Travers, a redshirt freshman forward from Harare, Zimbabwe. Travers got her second less than six minutes later, scoring on a penalty corner with assists from junior Caitlin Van Sickle and Falgowski. Kolojejchick, a junior from Larksville, Pa., made it 4-0 in the 33rd minute on a pass from sophomore Marta Malmberg to the right post.
UNC's only goal of the second half came 17 seconds after the break, when Stephens scored on a rebound. With two goals and an assist for the day, she was honored as the Player of the Game for the event's opener.
Sophomore Caitlin Powers started in goal for UNC and played the first half, saving the only shot on goal. Freshman Sassi Ammer played the second half, picking up three saves to preserve the shutout.
A matchup between Wake Forest and Iowa followed the UNC-Michigan game. The teams switch opponents on Sunday, with Michigan meeting Wake Forest at noon and UNC taking on Iowa at 2:30.
