Cebertowicz Shatters School Record In 50 Free

FEDERAL WAY, WASH. - The North Carolina men's swimming and diving team had an excellent first session at the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatics Center.
UNC's 200-yard freestyle relay team qualified in the Top 16 for the first time in the event since the 1990-91 school year. The Tar Heels qualified 12th in the preliminaries in a time of 1:18.61, just shy of the time the Tar Heels recorded at the ACC Championships when they finished in third place with a time of 1:18.35.
Sophomore Kyle Ficker led off the relay in 19.82 and he was followed by Steve Cebertowicz in a blistering 18.90 split, Brock Park with a 19.88 split and Evan Reed with a split of 20.01.
Sophomore J.T. Stilley recorded a career best time in the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle as he placed 29th with a time of 4:21.03. His previous career best was 4:22.47 in his freshman year. Stilley's time moved him into eighth place all-time in the event in Carolina history.
Junior Tom Luchsinger achieved a career best time in the 200-yard individual in the preliminaries of that event. Luchsinger finished 26th in a time of 1:45.77. His previous career best was 1:46.39 in 2011. He continues to rank second all-time in UNC history in the event.
Carolina senior Steve Cebertowicz qualified third in the 50-yard freestyle with a school record time of 19.34 seconds. Cebertowicz eclipsed his previous school record time of 19.59 seconds which he set at the 2012 ACC Championships. The Milwaukee, Wis., senior was the #16 seed in the event but had the third best time in the preliminaries. Senior Evan Reed and sophomore Kyle Ficker also swam in the preliminaries of the event. Reed finished in a time of 20.63 while Ficker was whistled for a false start.
North Carolina's 400-yard medley relay team finished 18th in a time of 3:17.88. The relay consisted of Evan Reed (50.70), Brock Park (56.66), Tom Luchsinger (48.09) and Steve Cebertowicz (42.43).
Senior David MacDonald competed in the one-meter diving preliminaries where he was 20th with a score of 303.80 points.
