UNC Shuts Out Longwood In Final Home Game Of The Fall
October 24, 2013 | Field Hockey
"It was a good game for our last home game of the year," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I was pleased with the number of goals we scored. I thought Longwood gave us a really solid 15 minutes and made it tough for us, but we were able to make some adjustments and I think after we got that first goal it kind of opened things up for us. I'm proud of our penalty corner execution again and the number and quality of the goals that we had. And of course I'm pleased to get a shutout."
UNC didn't manage to scorel until more than 26 minutes had elapsed, but after that the goals came quickly. In the 27th minute of play, sophomore Nina Notman scored the only goal the Tar Heels would need, delivering a strike on Carolina's second penalty corner of the game. Sophomore Emily Wold and graduate student Janne Grove assisted on the play.
In the 33rd minute, the Tar Heels scored on another corner, this one coming from junior Samantha Travers, assisted by Wold. Just 57 seconds before halftime, Notman scored again, grabbing possession of the ball near the top of the circle and firing a shot to put the Tar Heels up 3-0 at halftime.
Carolina continued to roll after the break, with back-to-back goals by sophomore Casey Di Nardo, who has scored seven times in the past three games. Her first came in the 40th minute, when freshman Lauren Moyer set a pass from the left side of the cage and Di Nardo edged it in back of Longwood keeper Kaye Goulding from the right. Less than seven minutes later the forward from Virginia Beach, Va., scored again. Goulding came out to play the ball and Di Nardo got in behind her. Her first shot was saved by a defender, but she gathered the rebound and shot again for her team-high 12th goal of the year.
Travers then added her second penalty corner goal of the night, assisted by freshman Julia Young and junior Loren Shealy in the 51st minute. In the 56th minute, senior Marta Malmberg scored on the first of two UNC penalty strokes to put the Tar Heels up 7-0. In the 66th minute, Moyer scored off a rebound after Goulding saved a shot by Malmberg.
The final Tar Heel goal came in the 69th minute on a second penalty stroke, this one by redshirt freshman Caroline Plyler, who scored the first goal of her career.
Senior Sinead Loughran missed the game with a concussion sustained in practice on Tuesday. Junior Charlotte Craddock missed the game with a leg injury. Both are considered as day-to-day.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to Norfolk, Va., to face two ranked teams. On Saturday, UNC will play No. 4 Connecticut in a neutral-site matchup at Old Dominion's facility. On Sunday, the Tar Heels will take on the 10th-ranked Lady Monarchs for the second time this season. The two met in Chapel Hill on Sept. 13 with Carolina beating ODU 3-0.
"We'll face two very good teams this weekend," Shelton said. "We view this as NCAA Tournament preparation, ACC Tournament preparation. We intentionally schedule weekends like this, and we know it's going to be very, very difficult."
