Lincoln Takes Down School Record in 50 Freestyle

The University of North Carolina women's swimming and diving team placed four swimmers in championship finals and seven in consolation finals heats on the second day of the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatics Center.

The 10th-ranked Carolina swimmers started out Thursday's preliminary session by placing two entries in the championship final and two in the consolation final of the 500-yard freestyle.
Senior Stephanie Peacock placed second in the prelims with a time of 4:39.20 while junior Danielle Siverling was close behind at 4:40.29. Sophomore Emma Nunn and senior Meredith Hoover qualified ninth and 11th, respectively, in times of 4:43.07 (just shy of her career best of 4:42.79) and 4:47.34 (which was faster than her previous personal best of 4:48.01).
Senior Cari Blalock qualified third in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:57.79. Junior Hannah Runyon-Hass and sophomore Rachel Canty qualified for the consolation and bonus consolation heats, respectively. Runyon-Hass placed 12th in the preliminaries in 1:59.87, a career best time (previous was 1:59.99). Canty placed 18th in the preliminaries in a time of 2:00.97, well below her previous personal best of 2:02.32. Senior Katie Rechsteiner also had a personal best in the event at 2:07.28 while placing 45th.
The highlight swim of the morning session for Carolina came from sophomore Hannah Lincoln who broke the school record in the 50-yard freestyle by going 22.17 seconds. She qualified in a tie for the top spot for tonight's final with Florida State's Tiffany Oliver. Lincoln's previous career best was a 22.67 at last November's Nike Cup. She broke the existing school record of 22.21 seconds set by Rebecca Kane in 2011.
Two more Tar Heel swimmers qualified for the consolation final and another for the bonus consolation heat. Sophomore Ally Hardesty was 13th in 22.70 (previous career best was 22.91) and sophomore Lauren Earp was 15th in 22.87 (previous career best was 22.97). Freshman Sarah Hitchens finished 21st in 23.13 to earn a spot in the bonus consolation heat. Freshman Sarah Koucheki was tied for 27th in the event at 23.39.
