Summers' Double-Double Too Much For FDU
November 21, 2015 | Women's Basketball
Bryant got off to a relatively slow start to the young season, averaging 6.0 points in the first three games. Tonight, she showed her senior leadership on a tough shooting night for the Tar Heels. The Goose Creek, S.C., native scored a career-high 15 points.
Summers, a red-shirt junior, notched her first career double-double, setting career bests with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
North Carolina (2-2) limited the visiting Knights to a 29.4 percent shooting percentage. Kelsey Cruz paced FDU with 16 points.
Walker found Summers on the block for a hoop and a 13-8 Tar Heel lead in the late stages of the first quarter.
The lead grew to eight points early in the second quarter, but FDU's Jackie Jackson converted an old-fashioned three-point play to get the Knights within a bucket, 22-20, of the Tar Heels. However, UNC scored eight of the last 10 points of the half to take a 30-22 advantage into halftime.
Stephanie Watts knocked down the Tar Heels first three-pointer of the game to put her club up 54-34. Carolina extended its lead to as may as 24 points later in the fourth quarter in winning its second game of the year.
Carolina will host Iona on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the second day of the tournament. Yale and FDU will immediately follow at 5 p.m.
