UNC Lacrosse Partipates In Vs. Cancer Event Saturday
November 3, 2015 | Men's Lacrosse
This weekend will mark the third year that the UNC men's lacrosse and UNC baseball teams are helping with the fight against childhood cancer, joining forces with the Vs. Cancer Foundation. All proceeds will benefit UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. The fundraisers will last throughout the season, but the teams will celebrate their efforts on Saturday, November 7 when the players will all shave their heads at 10 a.m. at Tar Heel Town.
In the past three years, the baseball team has raised almost $14,000 in partnership with the Vs. Cancer Foundation. Chase Jones, founder and CEO of the Vs. Cancer Foundation was treated for a stage IV brain tumor as a college freshman and baseball player at UNC. The support of his teammates during treatment is what motivated him to start the Vs. Cancer Foundation. ''The energy, the passion, and the commitment to help others has come together with the guys at UNC year after year. The scariest thing I went through during treatment was sitting next to young kids as they went through the same thing I was. Having personally been on the receiving end of these funds, I can attest to what these guys made happen: helping the next child, at UNC Lineberger Cancer Center, beat cancer.''
With the strong tie between UNC athletics and the Vs. Cancer Foundation, the UNC men's lacrosse team, led by coach Joe Breschi, quickly got involved as well. “We are thrilled to once again team up with Chase Jones and the Vs. Cancer foundation to help cure childhood cancer,” Coach Breschi said. “The student-athletes in our men's lacrosse program have raised nearly $72,000 in the last three years to help make a positive impact on children who are battling this serious disease. Our young men have a tremendous platform to help make a difference in kids' lives and they are passionate about this wonderful cause and foundation. We are looking forward to shaving our heads and making a difference on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. before the UNC-Duke football game at noon. It will be a great day to be Tar Heel athlete for kids!”
Vs. Cancer has worked with hundreds of athletes, teams and communities nationwide to fund the comprehensive spectrum of the pediatric cancer battle: from research initiatives across the country to healing programs within local children's hospitals.
