Bitter Named MLL Rookie of the Week
June 2, 2015 | Men's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league completed Week 8 of its 2015 season this past weekend and University of North Caolina alumni had stellar games across the board.
One week after Joey Sankey was named the Cascade Lacrosse Rookie of the Week for the Charlotte Hounds, it was Jimmy Bitter's turn to win the award after his performance for the Ohio Machine against the Denver Outlaws.
The Ohio Machine travelled to Denver to play against the Outlaws on Friday night, in what would turn out to be the first game Ohio has ever won in Mile High City. Although Denver started the second half up by one, the Machine went on to score five unanswered goals in the third, which inevitably lead to the 18-12 win for Ohio. Jimmy Bitter had four points during his MLL debut with the Machine. UNC alumnus Marcus Holman had another big game for Ohio, scoring five goals and one assist. Tom Schreiber (Princeton) and Holman now sit atop their team's leaderboard with 29 and 22 points on the season thus far.
The Boston Cannons, coming off back-to-back wins in recent weeks, hosted the Florida Launch on Saturday night and earned another one, winning 13-9. Four players scored three or more points for the Cannons, including 2013 UNC alumnus Davey Emala, who was named the Coca Cola Player of the Game.
The New York Lizards remain undefeated after Week 8, beating the Charlotte Hounds on the road, 21-16, despite the Hounds executing a rather impressive comeback; after being down 13 golas in the fourth quarter, they ended the game only down by five. Charlotte set the team record for two-point goals, scoring four against the Lizards. In only his second MLL game, Tar Heel alumnus Joey Sankey led his team with six points and one of his goals was a two-pointer.
