CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina senior attackman Steve Pontrello of Marlton, N.J., picked up a pair of significant honors this past weekend.
The Tewaaraton Foundation announced the 25 men's nominees for the 2016 Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour. The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.
Pontrello was among the 25 nominees for the award named this past Friday. He was not on the initial list of candidates but was added later in the season after it was obvious he was having a stellar campaign for the Heels. At the end of the regular season he leads UNC in goals (39) and points (53) and ranks second in assists (14).
Five men's finalists will be selected from the group of 25, announced on Thursday, May 12, and invited to the ceremony. The 16th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held Thursday, June 2 in Washington, D.C., at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
Pontrello was also named this past Sunday to the All-Tournament Team for the 2016 ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship. The senior attackman was involved in five of the seven goals in UNC's 10-7 semifinal loss to eventual ACC Tournament champion Syracuse. He had three goals and two assists in the match.
