Tar Heels Set To Host No. 2 Duke ... At Duke
October 20, 2017 | Field Hockey
The teams will square off Friday in a top-5 battle.
DURHAM , N.C. – The North Carolina field hockey team will host Duke Friday on the Blue Devils' home field, capping the Tar Heels' most unusual home season ever.
When the teams meet at 6 p.m. in a top-five Atlantic Coast Conference contest, it will be on the field – Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium – where both have played their home games this season. With a new facility under construction on campus, the Tar Heels have traveled to Durham for games and practices all season. Friday's matchup with the Blue Devils is the sixth and final "home" game for the Tar Heels in in Durham. They've gone 4-1 in the first five and are 12-3 overall, 3-2 in ACC play. Second-ranked Duke is 12-2 overall, 3-2 in ACC play.
"We're really looking forward to the game," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Duke is having an amazing year. Our team is a little young and inconsistent, but we've proven we can play with the best on a given day. So we're hoping to bring our best over to Durham on Friday night.
"Every year, no matter the records, it's just a great thrill to be a part of this rivalry. I know our kids are excited."
Fifth-ranked UNC is the designated home team (the teams alternate each year, and this year is Carolina's turn), but in field hockey that means little beyond uniform choice.
The Tar Heels will honor the lone member of this year's senior class, Gab Major, before the game.
In addition to Senior Night, UNC has designed it the team's Vs. Cancer game, and the Tar Heels have been fundraising to benefit UNC's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. The team visited the hospital on Thursday (Carolina is on fall break) to spend time with pediatric oncology patients and meet physicians and staff. There is no charge for admission to Friday's game. For directions to the field, which is on Duke's East Campus, click here. The street address is 20 Brodie Gymn Drive, Durham, NC 27708
"We're very grateful to Duke for providing us a practice opportunity a couple of times a week, in addition to playing games here," Shelton said. "And I just can't commend our kids enough for handling it as well as they have."
After Friday's game, UNC has just one more game in the regular season, Oct. 29 at Liberty. The 2017 ACC Tournament is set for Nov. 2, 3 and 5 in Louisville, Ky.
