Tar Heels Host Duke Sunday For Senior Day
October 20, 2018 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 1 North Carolina and No. 4 Duke will face off in field hockey on Sunday for the second time this season, meeting for a nonconference contest at Karen Shelton Stadium. The matchup between the Tar Heels (15-0) and Blue Devils (13-3) is set for 1 p.m. and admission is free.
It will be a busy day at Shelton Stadium:
• UNC will celebrate Senior Day, honoring six seniors – Leila Evans, Malin Evert, Morgan Goetz, Mary Kathryn Harrah, Ashley Hoffman and Eva van't Hoog – in ceremonies following the game. • The Senior Day game is sponsored by the UNC General Alumni Association and the first 250 fans will receive mini UNC pennants, courtesy of the GAA.
• It's Carolina Kids Club Day and the first 100 club members will receive UNC piggy banks.
• The first 50 Carolina Fever members will receive UNC dad hats.
• Fans can stop by the marketing table to pick up a free poster and enter a raffle to win two tickets to the upcoming ACC Tournament, hosted by UNC Nov. 1, 2 and 4.
• The team will sign autographs after the game.
In the first Carolina-Duke matchup of the season, on Sept. 21 in Durham, UNC won 2-0 as junior Catherine Hayden scored in the first half and freshman Erin Matson added another in the second half. That one is the game that counted in the ACC standings.
This is the second time in the past three years that the Tar Heels and Blue Devils have met twice during the regular season. In 2016, they split, with each team winning on its home field, and then met a third time, with Carolina taking the ACC Tournament matchup.
UNC is coming off a trip to Newton, Mass., where the Tar Heels beat No. 12 Boston College on Oct. 12 to finish off ACC regular-season play undefeated and then beat No. 5 Connecticut, the defending NCAA champion, on Oct. 14 in a neutral-site matchup.
After Sunday, UNC has just one regular-season game remaining, a trip to Norfolk, Va., to face Old Dominion next Sunday, Oct. 28. After that it's on to the ACC Championship, which North Carolina will host Nov. 1, 2 and 4 at Karen Shelton Stadium. As the regular-season champion, UNC is the top seed in the bracket and gets a first-round bye, opening play on Friday. For the full schedule and tournament information, click here.
