Comeback Comes Up Short At #3 Louisville

CHAPEL HILL - Janelle Bailey and Stephanie Watts each scored 16 points to help North Carolina nearly pull off an upset of No. 3 Louisville, who prevailed 73-66 on Thursday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener from KFC Yum! Center.
North Carolina (9-6, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) nearly erased a 19-point deficit by getting within two points on four separate occasions in the fourth quarter, but could not get over the hump with the Cardinals placing five players in double figures.
Paris Kea scored all 13 of her points in the second half to lead the comeback after Carolina trailed 40-23 at halftime. Taylor Koenen added 11.
Jazmine Jones paced Louisville (13-0, 1-0) with 17 points, while Arica Carter had 14 points off the bench. Asia Durr, Dana Evans and Kylee Shook each scored 10.
Kea, who went scoreless in the first half after being saddled with three fouls, scored seven-straight points in one stretch and 10 total in the third quarter to get UNC within 57-46 going to the fourth period.
A 9-0 run had UNC within 59-57 after a Koenen triple. The Heels knocked on the door three other times within a field goal but the high-flying Cardinals scored seven of the final nine points of the game to secure the win.
The Tar Heels trailed 40-23 at halftime after shooting only 23.3 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The Cards dominated the glass, 28-15, scoring 18 of their points in the paint.
Carolina hosts its ACC home opener on Sunday against Florida State at 1 p.m.
