UNC Caps Best Semester With NFHCA Academic Award
March 11, 2019 | Field Hockey, Academics
While putting together an undefeated season on the field last fall, the North Carolina field hockey team also accomplished an outstanding semester academically. UNC, the 2018 NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference Champion, earned a team grade point average of 3.36, the highest in program history, during the 2018 fall semester.
Â
Carolina was one of 76 schools honored Monday with a 2018 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award. The honor recognizes programs that earned a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester.
Â
"Throughout my time at UNC, I've seen a correlation between on-field success and academic success," said Tar Heel coach Karen Shelton, who is in her 38th year at the program's helm. "Our best teams athletically are also our best academically, and this team is the ultimate example of that. We were undefeated and also performed with excellence in the classroom – that's all we can ask of our student-athletes. I'm very proud of our Tar Heels for all the hard work that led to this honor."
Â
UNC placed eight student-athletes, more than any other school, on the 2018 All-ACC Academic Team, which was announced on Feb. 1.
Â
Still to be announced is the NFHCA National Academic Squad, which includes student-athletes who carried career GPAs of 3.3 through the fall semester. That group will be announced on March 18.
