Tar Heels Hit The Road At Elon Tuesday

TAR HEELS HIT THE ROAD AT ELON TUESDAY
• North Carolina will play its second road game of the 2019 season when it visits Elon on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
• Elon All-Access will stream the game live.
• Carolina is coming off a pair of wins over top-10 opponents, including a domiinating, 21-11 win over No. 5 Northwestern on March 2 and a 13-12 decision over No. 6 Virginia on March 9.
• The Tar Heels are ranked No. 3 in the IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse D1 Media polls this week. Elon is unranked this week.
SERIES HISTORY VS. ELON
• North Carolina leads the all-time series with Elon, 5-0. These two teams will be meeting on Tuesday for the sixth consecutive year.
• Carolina is 1-0 in Elon (with a win in 2016) and 4-0 against the Phoenix in Chapel Hill.
LAST YEAR IN CHAPEL HILL:
UNC 12, ELON 1
• Ela Hazar had a career-high eight points to lead fourth-ranked North Carolina to a 12-1 win over Elon on March 13, 2018.
• Hazar had three goals and tied her career high with five assists.
• Marie McCool and Katie Hoeg each had three goals and one assist for the Tar Heels, with McCool adding five draw controls. Jamie Ortega had a goal and an assist, Kara Klages and Ally Mastroianni each scored once and Charlotte Sofield had an assist.
• Stephanie Asher scored for the Phoenix.
• The game was originally scheduled to be played in Elon, N.C., but was moved to Chapel Hill due to wet field conditions. The Tar Heels and Phoenix played at the Finley Fields complex in Chapel Hill.
• Carolina scored just over a minute into the game on a McCool free position shot, then went on a 4-0 run in less than three minutes to lead 5-0 midway through the first half. It was 9-0 at halftime, and the Tar Heels eventually led 12-0 before Elon scored with 11:51 to play in the second half.
NEW STADIUM
• The University of North Carolina opened its new, on-campus UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium on Saturday March 2. In the inaugural women's lacrosse game played there, the third-ranked women downed fifth-ranked Northwestern, 21-11.
• The new facility has been under construction since May 2017 (coaches' offices are still a work in progress). It is built on the site of the old Fetzer Field, which housed six sports on campus from 1935 through 2017. The current name of the new facility is the UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium.
CAROLINA OUTLASTS VIRGINIA, 13-12, TO OPEN ACC PLAY
• Third-ranked North Carolina scored two goals in the final seven minutes to overcome a one-goal deficit and beat sixth-ranked Virginia, 13-12, on March 9 at UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium.
• After Carolina (5-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) led by two, 11-9, Virginia scored three consecutive goals in five minutes to take a 12-11 lead (its first since scoring the first goal of the game and leading, 1-0) with 10:14 left in the second half.
• The Tar Heels responded with a free position goal by Jamie Ortega,then an assist from Katie Hoeg that led to a Tayler Warehime goal with 5:35 remaining that proved to be the game-winner.
• Carolina's Taylor Moreno (5-1) made two big saves in the closing minutes, rejecting a free position try with 2:32 to go by Maggie Jackson and a last-second shot from Avery Shoemaker as the closing horn sounded. Caroline Wakefield also caused an important turnover for UNC that led to a ground ball by Gianna Bowe in the final two minutes.
