Tar Heels Sweep Day Two of Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL – Wrapping up nonconference play with a pair of wins Saturday, UNC topped Colgate in four sets before sweeping Radford to finish second in the Carolina Classic at Carmichael Arena. Senior Mia Fradenburg and freshman Carly Peck earned all-tournament honors.
Bouncing back from a heartbreaking loss to VCU on Friday night, Carolina dropped a single set on Saturday while picking up its first sweep of the season. Fradenburg anchored the Tar Heels with 13 and 14 digs, respectively, in each match. Peck reset her career-best to 10 kills vs. Colgate while providing high energy plays on the right side. Freshman Parker Austin stood out for the Tar Heels, posting a double-double (12 kills, 20 digs) vs. Colgate and a team-best 15 kills against Radford. UNC improved to 3-7 while Colgate dropped to 7-4 and Radford fell to 4-8.
Carolina 3, Colgate 1
The Tar Heels began the match with an energetic first set, starting with a kill by Skyy Howard for UNC's first point. The Tar Heels and Raiders traded three-point runs to keep the match close at the 10-10 mark. Lauren Harrison led the Heels with six kills in the first set An ace by Hunter Atherton extended UNC's edge to 16-13 as Colgate called a timeout. Carolina attacked at a .342 clip to win the set, 25-22.
Continuing the momentum from the first set, North Carolina took an early lead of 7-2, ushering in a Colgate timeout. Consistent effort from the Heels with a set-best four kills by Aristea Tontai and six digs by Parker Austin propelled UNC throughout the frame. The Raiders fought through five set points to reach the 24-19 mark as Carolina called time. However, Skyy Howard secured the 25-20 win with her seventh kill of the match.
Colgate responded in the third set, leading UNC 8-4 as the Tar Heels took an early timeout. Austin swatted five kills in the frame but the Raiders attacked at a .343 clip led by Alex Stein's seven kills. Carolina battled through two set points, but Colgate closed out the set 25-19, bringing the match to 2-1 in favor of the Tar Heels.
The fourth set stayed close throughout, with 12 ties and eight lead changes. Peck broke up the Colgate run with her 10th kill of the match. After a Colgate timeout at 23-all, a triple block by Peck, Tontai, and Lauren Harrison helped UNC close out the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
The Tar Heels balanced their attack among Peck, Howard, Austin and Harrison who each logged double-digit kills in the match. Fradenburg, Austin and Karenna Wurl did the same defensively. Colgate's Stein led the way for the Raiders with 19 kills and 14 digs.

Carolina went on a five-point run early, jumping to a 7-2 lead, thanks to two Peck kills. Radford brought the score back to 11-10 before a kill by Austin down the middle of the court put the Heels up 14-11. Tontai took advantage of an over-pass for kill straight down, putting the Heels up 18-12. The Tar Heels clinched the set on a 4-0 run, finished off by a Skyy Howard kill for the 25-16 win.
Building some momentum, Radford jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the Heels lost a challenge early in the frame. After a block by Harrison and Howard to go up 4-3, UNC maintained the lead for the remainder of the set. Radford's Stephanie Neast had consecutive kills blocked by Carolina, including a Harrison solo block, to make the score 15-11. A Destiny Cox kill extended UNC's lead to 21-14 on a five-point run with Atherton at the line. A serving error by the Highlanders gave UNC the set, 25-21 for a two-set advantage.
Carolina continued its attack into the third frame. A pair of Harrison kills, one down the middle and one from the left side, put UNC up 9-4 early in the set. A late five-point run featuring kills by Peck, Harrison and Austin gave UNC is largest lead of the match at 22-12. A Radford's Daria Burrows swatted her fifth kill to battle through one match point. However, the Tar Heels finished the match 25-13 on Austin's 15th kill, assisted by Atherton.
Austin led Carolina with 15 kills, good for a .571 clip while Tontai nearly matched her with eight kills at a .583 rate. Fradenburg dished out a pair of aces while anchoring the defense with 14 digs. Harrison set a career-best of six blocks. Radford's Stephanie Neast led the way with 11 kills.
