Historic Offensive Performance Lifts UNC Past High Point
February 15, 2020 | Women's Lacrosse
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Eleven different players scored goals as the second-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team exploded for 15 first-half goals and cruised to a 24-3 win over No. 25 High Point on Friday night at Vert Stadium.
The Tar Heels tied the school record for goals in a game, set against Longwood on April 15, 2007 and against Canisius on Feb. 19, 2014. The 24 goals were also the most scored by UNC in a road game and its most in any game since a 23-4 win over Liberty on Feb. 18, 2018.
Katie Hoeg and Jamie Ortega once again led the way for Carolina. Both players totaled eight points, with Hoeg tallying four goals and four assists and Ortega registering six goals and two assists. The Tar Heels also got three goals from Tayler Warehime and Scottie Rose Growney, who added an assist.
Julia Dorsey put together the best game of her young career, recording her first two goals and assists. Fellow freshmen Anna Barton, Bailey Horne and Livi Lawton also scored one goal apiece, the first of their careers, while Ally Mastroianni, Taylor McDaniels and Melissa Sconone each chipped in with a goal.
As good as UNC was on offense, it was just as exceptional on defense. Carolina held the Panthers scoreless for the first 20:42 of the game, and its three goals allowed were its fewest since a 20-2 win at Elon last season.
With the victory, the Tar Heels improved to 2-0. High Point fell to 1-1. UNC has won all eight games in the series, which began in 2011.
Key moment
The Tar Heels make their much-anticipated return to Dorrance Field on Sunday, when they host Davidson in their home opener. The 2 p.m. contest will mark the fifth all-time meeting between the two teams. UNC has won the previous four, the last of which came in 2003.
