For the second year in a row, the Carolina field hockey team has been recognized with Rammy Awards for Outstanding Team and Outstanding Female Athlete. The team was rewarded following a second consecutive undefeated season. Sophomore Erin Matson was named Outstanding Athlete after a 2019 campaign that earned her National Player of the Year honors.
Â
Ashley Hoffman, National Player of the Year in 2018 when she was a senior, won the Outstanding Athlete honor at last year's Rammy Awards.
Â
The 2019 Tar Heel field hockey team:
• Finished 23-0 for the second year in a row, winning the program's eighth NCAA title and 22nd ACC title.
• Became just the second program ever to complete back-to-back unbeaten seasons.
• Outscored opponents 92-24.
• Led the nation in points per game, goals per game, scoring margin and scoring average.
Â
As a sophomore in 2019, Erin Matson:
• Won the Honda Sport Award as national player of the year. She's the first UNC sophomore to win the honor.
• Was named National Player of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
• Earned first-team All-America and ACC Offensive Player of the Year honors, both for the second year in a row.
• Led the nation in goals per game and ranked second in assists per game.
Â
Matson also received a 2020 Rammy for Best Championship Performance. The Outstanding Athlete Rammy is the third of her UNC career, following the Outstanding Newcomer honor in 2019.
