Three School Records Fall Friday At ACCs

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Three school-record performances highlight North Carolina's effort on Friday at the ACC Men's Swimming Championship.
Senior Valdas Abaliksta finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, and in the process lowered his own school record with a time of 51.74.
Tomas Sungalia began the day sharing the 200-yard freestyle record with Jorden Merrilees. He left the Greensboro Aquatic Center as Carolina's record holder with a time of 1:34.00 that saw the Lithuanian win the B final race and earn a ninth-place finish for his squad.
The Tar Heels closed the evening by setting a third school standard in the 400-yard medley relay. The quartet of Chris Thames, Abaliksta, Boyd Poelke and Jack Messenger swam to a fifth-place showing at 3:07.39.
Poelke also finished sixth in the 100-yard butterfly with a personal best time of 46.02. The freshman from Waxhaw, N.C., is already the third fastest in the event in Tar Heel history.Â
Messenger placed 12th in the 100 fly with a time of 46.28 that gives him the fifth best time in program history.Â
Freshmen Patrick Hussey and Wesley Barnett finished 18th and 19th in the 400-yard Individual Medley with times of 3:50.27 and 3:52.99, respectively.Â
Senior Dimitrios Dimitriou touched 13th in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:36.08, while Daniel Koenigsperger was 22nd at 1:36.62, his best time of his senior campaign.Â
Junior Jacob Rauch was 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 52.97.Â
In the 100-yard backstroke, Thames finished 13th at 47.28, while Tucker Burhans placed 24th at 47.68.
Louisville leads the team standings with 783 points. The remainder of the top five as it stands heading to Saturday is Virginia Tech (767), NC State (732), Virginia (629) and North Carolina (545).
The fourth and final day of competition on Saturday gets underway with prelims at 10 a.m. in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast and 200 fly. The finals begin at 6 p.m in those four events along with the 1650 free and the 400 free relay.Â
