Field Hockey Earns Second Shutout Win Of Spring
March 13, 2021 | Field Hockey
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – North Carolina has played two field hockey games this spring and the end has looked the same in both: UNC 2, Opponent 0.
After a win over Louisville at home on March 5, the Tar Heels earned a road win on Saturday, beating host Wake Forest 2-0 behind a pair of first-quarter goals by junior Erin Matson. (Matson also had both goals in the win over the Cardinals.)
UNC is now 12-1 on the season heading into a home game on March 19 against Boston College.
As in the win over Louisville, both Tar Heel goals came before halftime. Unlike the victory over the Cardinals, in which all of the UNC scoring came off of penalty corners, both goals against Wake Forest came from the field.
The first, which came midway through the first quarter, started with a takeaway by freshman Kiersten Thomassey just beyond midfield. She launched the fast break, passing ahead to junior Hannah Griggs, who carried the ball down the right side then passed it back to Thomassey, who tapped it to Matson for the one-touch finish into the top of the cage.
Carolina scored again three and a half minutes later, following a Wake Forest penalty corner, the first of the day for either team. UNC senior Amanda Hendry made the save on the Demon Deacon shot and the Tar Heels were off and running on the counterattack. After the Wake keeper, Tori Glaister, came out to play the ball, Matson grabbed the rebound off her pads, settled it and sent it into the empty cage for a 2-0 lead.
After scoring on their first two shots and getting off just one more before halftime, UNC took seven shots in the fourth quarter to finish with 12 on the day. Wake took two shots, one in the first quarter (on what proved to be the Demon Deacons' only penalty corner of the day) and another in the fourth.
The Tar Heels drew just two penalty corners, both in the fourth quarter, and weren't successful on either.
Hendry made one save in the team's sixth shutout of the season.
