Field Hockey Hosts No. 7 Virginia Friday

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina field hockey team plays its final Atlantic Coast Conference home game on Friday, hosting Virginia at Karen Shelton Stadium at 4 p.m.
The game has been designated as the team's inaugural Mental Health Awareness Game. The Tar Heels will wear special shirts in warmups and informational messages will play throughout the game. Additionally, fans can visit tables on the concourse for information on mental health and available resources.

There is no charge for admission and the first 100 UNC fans will get a free pair of Carolina field hockey socks.
No. 1 UNC and No. 7 Virginia are facing off for the 80th time in a series that dates back to 1976. They last met in the 2021 ACC Championship Game, which Carolina won 1-0.
Carolina vs. Virginia
• UNC leads the overall series vs. Virginia 61-18 and has won the last 10 meetings.
• The teams last met in the 2021 ACC Championship game in Syracuse. Third-seeded UNC and fifth-seeded Virginia played through a scoreless first half before Tar Heel forward Erin Matson notched the game's lone goal on a penalty corner early in the third quarter, assisted by Paityn Wirth on the insert and Madison Orobono on the stick stop. The Tar Heels had just four shots on the day and only two penalty corners, while Virginia had five shots and two corners.
• The last meeting in Chapel Hill was on Oct. 12, 2020. In an ACC-only-due-to-Covid fall season, the Tar Heels and Cavaliers played on back-to-back days, Oct. 11 and 12, with the first matchup (a 5-1 UNC win) counting as the conference game and the second (a 2-1 UNC win) a nonconference matchup. Eva Smolenaars (now graduated) and Meredith Sholder scored the two goals in that most recent game.
• The teams' last regular season meeting was a 3-2 overtime win for UNC in Charlottesville, Va., on Oct. 29, 2021. After missing three games with a finger injury, Erin Matson returned to the turf and led UNC with a hat trick, the gamewinner coming 4:31 into OT.
• The past four matchups have been one-goal margins, with two going into overtime. In the past three meetings – the 2021 ACC Championship and two overtime wins in Charlottesville – Erin Matson scored the gamewinner. In the last meeting in Chapel Hill, a 2-1 win on Oct. 12, 2020, Matson assisted on the gamewinner by Meredith Sholder.
• Virginia's last win in the series came in the 2016 ACC Tournament, when the Cavaliers beat UNC 4-2 in the conference championship game, played in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Next up for UNC is the final home game of the regular season, on Sunday at 2 p.m. against No. 9 Saint Joseph's. The Tar Heels will celebrate Senior Day prior to the start of the game.
