July 25, 2022 | Swimming & Diving
IRVINE, Calif. – Eleven Carolina swimmers are set to compete at the 2022 Phillips 66 National Championships from July 26-30 at the William Woollett, Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine, Calif.
The 2022 Phillips 66 National Championships begins on July 26 with the women's 200m butterfly. Each day follows the same schedule, with preliminary heats beginning at noon ET and finals beginning at 8 p.m. ET. The Olympic Channel will provide live coverage of Tuesday – Saturday finals, with the preliminaries being streamed daily on www.usaswimming.org.
"I'm very excited about this trip out to California," UNC Head Coach Mark Gangloff said. "Our athletes that are headed to Nationals did a great job preparing themselves this summer and I think we will swim extremely well."
Representing the Tar Heels on the men's side will be Dylan Citta, Mateja Milovanovic, Boyd Poelke, Nick Radkov, Noah Rutberg, and Matthew Van Deusen.
Grace Countie, Sophie Lindner, Greer Pattison, Skyler Smith, and Ellie VanNote will compete on behalf of the Tar Heels on the women's side.
"Looking at the Paris 2024 Olympics, our program will continue to put an emphasis on swimming in the best long course competitions that we can. This national championship will include most of the top domestic athletes but will also include many international athletes from all over the world. Giving our UNC athletes exposure to this level of competition will help in their evolution as athletes while increasing UNC's representation on the national stage."
Lindner is entered in four events, Countie is scheduled to compete in three events while Poelke, Rutberg, Smith and Vannote are each registered in a pair of events.
"Every time you get to compete against the best you learn something about yourself," Gangloff stated. "My expectations are to see our athletes go out and do some best times. We focus on trying to be better than we have ever been."
