June 28, 2023 | Women's Basketball
North Carolina will host South Carolina in the 2023 ACC/SEC Women's Basketball Challenge, as announced Wednesday by the two conferences. The Tar Heels and Gamecocks will face off at Carmichael Arena on Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. TV information is still pending.
UNC's women's basketball ticket packages, which will include this game, will go on sale later this summer. Single-game tickets will be available in early fall. Tar Heel fans can fill out an interest form here to be notified about on-sale dates.
North Carolina and South Carolina will face off at a non-neutral site for the first time since the 1988-89 season, when UNC traveled to Columbia, S.C., and the Gamecocks won 98-71 on Jan. 4, 1989. The most recent game in Chapel Hill was the previous season, when Carolina won 77-73 at Carmichael on Dec. 12, 1987.
UNC leads the overall series 11-9. The last 12 games in a row have been at neutral sites, with the most recent three coming in the NCAA Tournament. On March 25, 2022, South Carolina won 69-61 in a Sweet 16 game in Greensboro, N.C., and the Gamecocks went on to win the NCAA title.
Prior to that, the teams played in the 2015 NCAA Tournament, with South Carolina winning in a Sweet 16 game in Greensboro. In the 2014 NCAA Tournament, UNC beat South Carolina 65-58 in a Sweet 16 game in Stanford, Calif., to advance to the Elite Eight.
Between 1990 and 2013, the teams met eight times for neutral-site matchups in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The South Carolina matchup joins games against UConn and Oklahoma on the Tar Heels 2023-24 schedule.
