Faasse Named MAC Hermann Trophy Finalist
December 11, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina women's soccer junior Kate Faasse, a newly minted national champion and the nation's leading goal scorer, has been named a finalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy.Â
Faasse joins Duke's Maggie Graham and Wake Forest's Caiya Hanks as the three players up for the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer, as announced by United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club on Wednesday.Â
A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Faasse is the first Tar Heel to be a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist since Brianna Pinto in 2020 and the 20th player in program history to be named a finalist at least once in their career. Carolina has had seven players win a combined nine Hermann Trophies, the most by any school. The last recipient was Crystal Dunn in 2012.
The 2024 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Missouri, on Jan. 3, 2025, to formally announce this year's winners.
Faasse has been racking up the awards this year. The forward was named to the All-America First Team, All-Atlantic Region First Team, All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team and ACC All-Tournament Team to complement her Hermann Trophy finalist accolade.
She had four goals and three assists during the NCAA Tournament to help North Carolina earn its 23rd national championship. She netted the game-winner in both the quarterfinals and semifinals while dishing out the game-winning assist in the third round.  Â
After her tally in the College Cup semifinals, Faasse became the nation's outright leading scorer with 20 goals. Her 44 points top the ACC standings and is tied for second in the country. She also recorded an NCAA-leading eight game-winning goals.
Her 44 points and 20 goals are the most by a Tar Heel in a single season since Casey Nogueria had 58 and 25, respectively, in 2008. She is the eighth Carolina player to record 40+ points in one year since the turn of the century.
Three of her five braces on the year came during the postseason with one during the NCAA Tournament. She is the first UNC player to have 3+ braces in one season since Alessia Russo had five in 2019. In fact, only three Tar Heels have had 3+ braces in a single season in the last decade: Faasse (5, 2024), Russo (5, 2019) and Bridgette Andrzejewski (4, 2016).
Faasse surpassed her point total from her freshman (6) and sophomore (7) season combined just 10 games into the 2024 campaign. She started all 27 games this season and led all field players with 2,300 minutes.
