Women’s Lacrosse Takes On Virginia In ACC Quarterfinals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Postseason is officially here for the 14th-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team, which heads to Charlotte for the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament to take on No. 6 Virginia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, April 24. First draw is set for 2 p.m. ET at American Legion Memorial Stadium.
The Tar Heels, who earned a first-round bye, enter the tournament as the fourth seed while the Cavaliers are slotted in fifth. The full bracket can be found here.
All ACC Tournament games will be televised on ACC Network with live studio coverage surrounding the semifinal and championship games. Talent includes Jay Alter, Dana Boyle, Sheehan Stanwick Burch and Charlotte North.

ACC Tournament History
UNC is seeking its eighth ACC Championship title in program history. The team, which won its first ACC title in 2002, won six in a row from 2016-22 (no ACC Tournament in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The Tar Heels' six-consecutive ACC crowns tied Maryland (2009-14) as the longest streak in the event's history.
Carolina's seven total ACC Championship titles are second-most in conference history, with Maryland owning the record at 11. Head coach Jenny Levy's seven ACC titles is the most for a head coach in ACC history.
UNC won 20 straight tournament games from April 28, 2016 until April 30, 2023,
which is the longest streak in ACC history. North Carolina owns the ACC Tournament record for most goals scored during the entire tournament with 53 from 2017. UNC also owns the ACC Tournament record for most assists during the entire tournament with 30 from 2021.
UNC is 14-0 all-time in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals, and 2-4 all-time against Virginia in the tournament.
Heels vs. Hoos
This will be the 50th meeting all-time between UNC and UVA. The Tar Heels lead the series at 36-13, including 5-1 at a neutral site. Carolina has won the last 14 games against Virginia. UNC's last loss to UVA was on May 17, 2014, in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
In the Last Meeting
UNC last faced UVA on Feb. 23, 2024, in Charlottesville in the ACC opener. The Tar Heels won, 10-9, in overtime after Eva Ingrilli's golden goal with Alyssa Long having the game-winning assist.
Last Time Out
The Tar Heels are coming off a 16-11 win over No. 25 Duke in the regular season finale last Thursday, improving to 15-straight wins over the crosstown foe. Caroline Godine led all players with six points behind three goals and three assists. Darcy Felter and Liv Pikiell also contributed hat tricks as the defense kept Duke to just four goals in the second half.
She's a Heel and a Hoo
Head coach Jenny Levy (née Slingluff) is a 1992 UVA graduate, earning her degree in rhetoric and communications. She won Virginia's first national championship with them in 1991. Levy was the leading scorer during the 1991 NCAA Tournament with eight goals, two assists and 10 points, including five goals in the semifinals and three in the title game.
Coaching Connections
Caylee Waters, UVA assistant coach, was a standout All-American for the Tar Heels from 2014-17 and won the NCAA title in 2016. She was the 2015 and 2016 National Goalie of the Year and still owns the school record for single-season saves (177, 2017).
Waters and UNC assistant coach Marie McCool played together at UNC for three years, also playing under Levy for Team USA which won the 2022 World Championship.
Kerrigan Miller, UVA assistant coach, played her grad year at Carolina in 2021 and was a GA/Director of Operations in 2022 when UNC was the undefeated national champion.

North Carolina was ranked No. 15 in last week's ILWomen/IWLCA poll and No. 18 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine poll. The team has been ranked in the top-16 by IWLCA all season. UNC is also at No. 14 in the latest RPI.
Carolina ranks second in the ACC and seventh in the country with 8.33 assists/game, as well as fourth in the ACC and 15th in the country with 16.40 draw controls/game. UNC is also fourth in the ACC and eighth in the country with a .923 clearing percentage, as well as fourth in the ACC and 13th in the country with 22.73 points/game.
Ashley Humphrey, the NCAA single-season assists record holder with 88 from 2022 while at Stanford, ranks 13th (4th ACC) nationally with 37 assists and 16th (4th ACC) with 2.47 assists/game. Humphrey is the current active Division I career leader with 3.21 assists/game. She ranks second with both 167 career assists and 4.87 points/game.
Emily Nalls leads all active DI players with 86 career appearances (and she has started all 86 games). Her 162 career ground balls rank seventh among all active DI players and her 101 career caused turnovers rank 15th among all active DI players.
Caitlyn Wurzburger's 114 career assists ranks 18th among all active DI players. Her 247 points ranks 27th.
