Women’s Lacrosse Falls To Virginia In ACC Quarterfinals, 13-12

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sixth-ranked Virginia got the best of No. 14 North Carolina women's lacrosse this time around, as the Tar Heels dropped a 13-12 heartbreaker in the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon in Charlotte.
Following the loss, the fourth-seeded Tar Heels move to 10-6 (6-3 ACC) on the year while the fifth-seeded Cavaliers improve to 14-3 (6-3 ACC).

How It Happened
- Virginia jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first two minutes before goals from Kiley Mottice and Olivia Dirks leveled the score.
- Ashley Humphrey and Caitlyn Wurzburger both contributed a goal and an assist to put UNC up 4-3 with 3:40 on the clock, but UVA made it a tie game once again to end the first.
- A converted free position attempt from Darcy Felter gave the Tar Heels an early lead at the start of the second frame, but the Cavaliers went on a 3-0 run to take a two-goal lead.
- Sparked by Dirks' second of the day, Carolina responded with three unanswered of its own to end the half with a narrow 8-7 lead.
- UVA out-scored UNC 5-1 in the third quarter to enter the final frame with a 12-9 advantage for its largest lead of the game.
- Mottice's hat trick and a goal from Alyssa Long got the Tar Heels back within one with 8:15 left in regulation.
- The Cavaliers extended their lead to two with 2:35 remaining before Humphrey found the back of the net with 48.1 seconds to go.
- Unable to find the equalizer in the game's final moments, the final score stood at 13-12 as Virginia now advances to the ACC semifinals.

- Bailey Horne had a game- and career-high nine of UNC's 14 draw controls. UVA had 15.
- Led by Emily Nalls' game-high three caused turnovers, the Tar Heels finished with nine to the Cavalier's six.
- UNC also had an 18-12 advantage in ground balls with Gabi Hall recording three.
- Mottice had a team-high three goals while Long and Humphrey also finished with three points.
