Gangloff Agrees To Three-Year Contract Extension With UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Swimming and Diving Head Coach Mark Gangloff has agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension that will keep him at the University of North Carolina through June 30, 2029.
Â
"Mark has done an outstanding job elevating both our men's and women's swimming and diving programs and routinely has our teams ranked in the Top 25,'' said Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. "In addition to their consistent growth in the pool, our swimmers and divers continue to be terrific representatives of the University in the classroom and community. We're very happy that Mark will continue to lead those programs for years to come."
Â
Added Executive Associate Athletic Director Steve Newmark, who will transition to AD in the coming months: "It is impressive to see how Mark has used his background and experiences as an Olympic athlete to help our young men and women compete both at the collegiate and international levels. Our swimming and diving programs at Carolina have rich histories, and it's clear that Mark is committed to positively adding to that history."
Â
Under Gangloff, who was hired in 2019, the men's program has routinely finished in and around the Top 25 at the NCAA Championships, and their 19th-place showing this season was its best finish since 2015. The women have finished in the Top 20 at the national meet in five of the last six seasons, including a 10th-place showing in 2023, the program's highest finish since 2001.
Â
"It's so special to serve as the head swimming and diving coach at a place like North Carolina and I'm excited for what's to come for our program," said Gangloff. "We continue to attract some of the top young athletes both nationally and internationally, and we're seeing that success payoff as we challenge in the ACC, at the NCAA meets, and on the international stage. I also believe that a place like Carolina attracts the best and brightest, and when you combine that with the tradition in our program, we have a chance to compete each time we hit the pool. I want to thank Chancellor Roberts, Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham, Executive Associate Athletic Director Steve Newmark, the Board of Trustees, and countless others who are dedicated to providing our young people a first-class experience, while competing for championships."
Â
Gangloff, along with his staff and collection of athletes, has rewritten UNC's record book over the last few years. In the last two seasons alone, the Tar Heels have set nearly 50 school records and numerous other pool records. The men and women have combined to produce more than 100 All-America recognitions during Gangloff's tenure in individual events, relays and on the diving boards.
Â
Carolina's profile on the international stage has also increased during Gangloff's tenure. Just last year, the program saw 13 Tar Heels combine for 12 medals at world and regional competitions, while three swimmers secured positions on the U.S. National Team. UNC also had eight Heels qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2024.
Â
In addition to the accomplishments around the pool, the swimming and diving program routinely appears on the CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams list, while seeing student-athletes qualify for conference and school-based All-Academic teams. In addition, the program has recently seen two student-athletes claim first-team Academic All-America honors.  Â
