Tar Heel Women's Swimmers Add Four To Program

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's women's swimming and diving program has added four outstanding prospects who will become Tar Heels in the fall semester of 2002. Coach Frank Comfort made the announcement Monday.
Elizabeth Bruce of Wichita, Kan. and Amanda Smith of Evans City, Pa. have signed national letters of intent to attend UNC. Mary Margaret Gamblin of Raleigh, N.C. and Allison Herman of Chapel Hill, N.C. are recruited walk ons who will also swim at North Carolina next fall.
"We're delighted we could attract a big class of women's swimmers this fall," says Tar Heel head coach Frank Comfort. "We are going to miss a very talented senior class next year but those who have committed to us so far go a long way in helping us replace those young ladies. This is a talented group of four with great diversity and versatility. Our entire staff is excited about them being Tar Heels in the future."
ruce swims for the Wichita Swim Club where she is coached by Eric Nelson. She has career best times of 1:03.6 in the 100-yard breaststroke, 2:19.65 in the 200-yard breaststroke, 1:12.33 in the 100-meter breaststroke and 2:37.26 in the 200-meter breaststroke.
Smith swims with the Seneca Valley Swim Club where she is coached by Tom Donati and former UNC All-America swimmer Melanie Buddemeyer Kozlina. She has career best times of 2:01.36 in the 200-yard individual medley, 4:22.10 in the 400-yard individual medley, 1:51.95 in the 200-yard freestyle and 2:03.85 in the 200-yard backstroke.
Gamblin competes for coach Larry Shofe at the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla. She has career bests of 57.76 in the 100-yard butterfly, 57.48 in the 100-yard backstroke and 2:02.27 in the 200-yard backstroke.
Herman swims for coach Randy Erlenbach and the North Carolina Aquatic Club. A versatile performer her personal bests are 10:06.98 in the 1000-yard freestyle, 16:57.14 in the 1650-yard freestyle, 2:05.17 in the 200-yard butterfly and 4:29.36 in the 400-yard individual medley.
