CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The #18 North Carolina men's lacrosse team, stung by a bitter 9-4 defeat at the hands of Bucknell last Saturday, will try to bounce back this Saturday when the Tar Heels play #13 Navy at 12 noon at Rip Miller Field in Annapolis, Md.
The Tar Heels opened up the season February 18 with a 12-7 home victory over Fairfield before falling to Bucknell last Saturday in a game played at loyola College in Baltimore. Navy opened last Saturday with a 9-8 overtime loss against UMBC at Annapolis.
The game will mark a matchup of a pair of North Carolina graduates in the head coaching positions. Richie Meade, '76, is in his seventh year as the head coach at the Naval Academy. Meade served as a Carolina assistant in 1978 and again from 1988-90. First year Tar Heel head coach John Haus, '83, is looking to rebuild a Carolina program which has fallen on hard times in recent years.
UNC will be looking to break a seven-game road losing streak. The Tar Heels have not won on the road since beating Duke 10-9 on April 14, 1999 in Durham, N.C.
Carolina leads the all-time series with Navy 8-6. The Tar Heels and the Midshipmen have traded home-field victories since the series resumed in 1996. Carolina won last year's game 11-10 in overtime on a goal by Jeff Sonke. The Tar Heels trailed 7-2 in the first half of that game but rallied to lead in the fourth quarter before Navy forced the game into overtime. UNC's last two visits to Annapolis have been forgettable as the Tar Heels lost 13-12 in 1997 by giving up two goals in the last minute of the game. Carolina lost again 8-6 in 1999. North Carolina's last win at Annapolis came in 1985 by a 15-11 score.
