Tar Heels, Blue Devils Fight To Scoreless Tie

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? North Carolina and Duke played 110 minutes of soccer Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 4,255 fans at Fetzer Field but neither team could find the back of the net in a scoreless tie.
With the tie, the Tar Heels held on to their precarious lead in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 3-1-1 conference record. Duke moved into a tie for seventh place in the league with Virginia with a 1-3-2 conference record. The Tar Heels, ranked #2 nationally, are now 13-1-3 overall while Duke is 6-8-2.
oth teams had some excellent scoring opportunities in the match. UNC outshot the Blue Devils 20-9 but Thora Helgadottir made nine saves for Duke. UNC had seven saves in the match as Duke found the frame with seven of its nine shots.
Neither team had a great scoring chance in the first half but Duke had the first one of the game when UNC defender Sara Randolph cleared a ball off the line early in the second half. Helgadottir had three great saves late in regulation, making kick saves on shots by Alyssa Ramsey and Anne Morrell and then later denying Anne Felts on an open look from the six-yard line. Duke had the best scoring chance of overtime when a shot by Carolyn Riggs was barely punched over the goal by Jenni Branam in the early part of the second overtime.
With the tie, UNC and Duke both earned 1.5 points in the Carlyle Cup standings, the all-sports trophy between the two teams. UNC leads the current year's competition 6-4.5.
UNC returns to the pitch for its final two regular season games this week against Wake Forest Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Winston-Salem and against Maryland at Fetzer Field Friday at 7 p.m. UNC must now win both matches to earn the top seed in next week?s ACC Tournament at Florida State.
Carolina played the match minus two starters. Starting defender Catherine Reddick is currently playing with the U.S. National Team and will not return to the team until the ACC Tournament final if Carolina is lucky enough to advance that far. Midfielder Lori Chalupny is currently in a cast with ligament damage in her left ankle and she is out four to six weeks. Earlier in the season UNC lost starters Amy Steadman (defense) and Jordan Walker (midfield) to season-ending knee injuries.
