Carolina Women's Soccer Remains Unbeaten With 3-2 Win Over Texas
September 15, 2002 | Women's Soccer
Coach Anson Dorrance's team faced a stiff challenge from the Longhorns on Sunday afternoon by persevered for the win with three goals by standout forwards. Junior Alyssa Ramsey, sophomore Anne Morrell and freshman Lindsay Tarpley all scored in the Tar Heel win. UNC improved to 5-0-1 with the win and the Tar Heels have won five straight games since a season-opening tie at Nebraska. Texas fell to 3-2 and has lost its last two games to #2 Stanford 1-0 and #1 North Carolina 3-2.
Sunday's game was played in a driving rainstorm that delayed the start of the game for 30 minutes. Play was also halted in the first half because of lightning on one occasion. Carolina got on the board at the 3:10 mark when Alyssa Ramsey stole a ball at the top of the penalty area and lofted a bending ball over the Texas goalkeeper from 18 yards out. Texas got the equalizer at the 8:22 mark when sophomore forward Kelly McDonald made an end line run and centered the ball to junior forward Kylee Wosnuk who touched the ball in at the near post.
UNC took the lead for good in the 39th minute with a nifty exchange of passes in the penalty area. Freshman midfielder Lori Chalupny took a corner kick which was redirected out by the Texas defense. Chalupny then centered the ball to the left side of the box where junior forward Elizabeth Ball headed the pass back to the center of the box for Morrell to chest the ball in from about four yards.
Leading at halftime 2-1, Carolina added to its lead in the 52nd minute when sophomore midfielder Sara Randolph took a hard shot from about 35 yards out. The worm burner appeared to be headed straight to the Texas keeper but Lindsay Tarpley zipped in and intercepted the ball before it got the keeper and scored easily into the net.
Texas cut the Tar Heels' lead to 3-2 in the 73rd minute. The UNC defense cleared the ball out to midfielder where Longhorn sophomor forward Kelly McDonald retrieved it and sent the ball back into the Tar Heels' penalty area. A UNC defender failed to head the ball out and it bounced between her and Tar Heel goalkeeper Aly Winget who was just off her line. Unfortunately, the bounce sent the ball over Winget's head into the goal. Laura Kram assisted on the Longhorn goal.
UNC improved to 4-0 all-time against Texas with the win. The Tar Heels will not play again until this Friday at 5 p.m. when they meet Marquette at the Duke adidas Classic at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
