RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 23 University of North Carolina men's swimming and diving team finished up its dual meet season Friday night with an impressive performance as the Tar Heels defeated arch-rival NC State 155-88 at the Carmichael Natatorium. Freshman Jon Albrecht won two individual events for the Tar Heels and swam on one winning relay and senior Sean Quinn set the pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Carolina won 10 of 13 events overall and showed balance throughout the lineup as the Tar Heels won the dual meet over the Wolfpack for the third straight year.
UNC improved to 9-4 overall on the season and 5-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. All four UNC losses this year were to Top 25 teams--No. 6 Minnesota, No. 9 Virginia, No. 11 Georgia and No. 24 Florida State. NC State, after winning its first six dual matches of the season, fell to 7-4 overall and 3-4 in ACC dual meets.
The dual meet began well for the Wolfpack as its 400-yard medley relay team stroked its way to victory over the Tar Heels. Steven Cowling, Rob Yeager, Kevin Devins and Scott Dettloff touched first in a time of 3:21.30 to edge the Tar Heel team of Eddy Matkovich, Sean Quinn, Chad Ames and Justin Donato which clocked a 3:22.73.
UNC bounced back by winning the next seven events to pull out to a healthy lead. Senior Stephen Mohr started the Tar Heel comeback with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle at he touched in 9:21.30. Yuri Suguiyama took second for the Tar Heels in 9:24.04 and Eric Mohr was fifth in a season best time of 9:35.48.
Carolina also took 1-2-4 in the 200-yard freestyle as Albrecht picked up his first win of the night, touching in 1:40.81. Michael Pigassou was second at 1:41.56 and Reid Owen fifth in 1:43.39.
Senior Michael Chenier took first place in the 50-yard freestyle as he won in a time of 20.93 seconds. Eddy Matkovich was fourth for the Tar Heels in 21.81.
Junior Casey Coble scored a key win for the Tar Heels in the 200-yard individual medley as he touched out NC State's Rob Yeager by one-tenth of a second (1:52.55 to 1:52.65). Quinn finished third in 1:54.18 and John Hartmann was fourth in 1:54.92.
Carolina senior Stephen Krebs, diving in his last dual meet won the one-meter diving for UNC as he scored 314.25 points to edge NC State's T.J. Ferguson who had 310.875. UNC's Eric Poitras was third with 303.90 points and senior Rob McMillen fifth with 253.725 points, tying with Carolina's Ryan Matuszak for the fifth spot.
The Tar Heels then put the meet out of reach for the Wolfpack by finishing 1-2-3-4 in the 200-yard butterfly. Freshman Josh Glasco led the way with a time of 1:52.09, followed by Casey Coble at 1:52.63, Chad Ames at 1:53.93 and Eric Mohr at 1:54.53.
Albrecht got his second win of the night in the 100-yard freestyle as he led another 1-2-3 Tar Heel finish. Albrecht finished first in 46.39, followed by Justin Donato at 46.50 and Michael Pigassou at 46.64 seconds.
The Wolfpack picked up its second win of the night as Kevin Barkley topped the finishers in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:49.81, edging Carolina's John Hartmann, who went 1:50.46. UNC's Jon Van Assen finished fifth with a time of 1:56.32.
Carolina bounced back with a 1-2-3 finish in the 500-yard freestyle led by Suguiyama who won in a time of 4:34.03, just .25 of a second ahead of teammate Reid Owen. Stephen Mohr finished third with a time of 4:38.34.
State got its third win of the night when Jared Bench won the three-meter diving with a score of 330.30. UNC's Eric Poitras was second at 322.725 while Stephen Krebs was fourth (287.625) and Rob McMillen fifth (267.675).
Senior Sean Quinn set an NC State pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke as he touched first in 2:00.69 as NC State's Rob Yeager was second in 2:02.26. Yeager set the previous school record earlier this season when he went 2:01.25. Sinisa Haberle went a season best 2:08.80 to finish third and freshman Patrick Woodruff was fourth in 2:08.85.
The Tar Heels finished off the night with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Eddy Matkovich, Michael Pigassou, Jon Albrecht and Justin Donato touched in a time of 3:04.60.
