Raleigh, N.C. - North Carolina's men's golf team fired a three-over-par 287 in the final round for a five-under 847 total and tied for second place with Tulsa at The Intercollegiate played at the Raleigh Country Club, a par 71, 6,782-yard layout. Southern Methodist, in third place going into the final round, fired a five-under 279 to finish with a nine-under 843 total to slide past the Tar Heels for the team championship. Wake Forest finished in fourth place with an 852 total while Tennessee finished fifth at 855 and NC State and Georgia Southern tied for sixth place with 856 totals.
Chris Noel of Tulsa held on to his second round individual lead, carding a one-over 72 to finish with a six-under 207 total, one stroke ahead of Tennessee's David Skinns who fired a four-under 67 in the final round for a 208 total. A trio of players - Carolina's Richard Treis, Tulsa's David Inglis and SMU's Stephen Sparolini - are deadlocked in third place with four-under 209 totals. SMU's Nicholas Loar, who fired the low final round of five-under 66 to lead SMU's charge, tied for sixth place with Georgia Southern's Aron Price at 210.
Three other Tar Heels finished in the top 20. Dustin Bray, Ramon Bescansa and Kevin Silva all finished with two-over 215 totals. Silva, a freshman from New Bedford, Mass., fired the low round of the day for the Tar Heels, a three-under 68. Jeremy Elliott tied for 38th place with a 218 total. Bob Cherry and Fernando Figueroa competed as individuals. Cherry tied for 46th place with a 221 total while Figueroa tied for 67th at 226.
"SMU played very well today and deserved to win," says Tar Heel Assistant Coach Jamie Green. "The hole locations throughout the tournament were very difficult and if you were not playing as well as you'd like at the beginning of a round, it was difficult to come back. That's the position in which we put ourselves today.
"We are extra proud of Richi's play this week," says Green. "He's made great strides this spring, doing all the little things to get better, and we're glad he's seeing those rewards."
Carolina's next tournament is just a few days away as they will be playing in the ACC Championship next weekend where Bray will be defending his 2002 ACC Individual Title. The 54-hole event, played at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C., takes place Friday through Sunday with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day.
