CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Coming off its first NCAA Tournament appearance in six years in 2004, the University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team will play a challenging 12-game regular season schedule in 2005 highlighted by four contests against fellow NCAA teams from 2004 and a trip to the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. to face Notre Dame. Coach John Haus officially finalized the schedule Tuesday.
The Tar Heels will open the season February 26 at home against the Denver Pioneers at Fetzer Field after beating Denver 11-6 a year ago in Colorado. That contest is one of five home games for the Tar Heels this season. UNC will also host Duke, Cornell, Johns Hopkins and Air Force. Notre Dame was scheduled to come to Chapel Hill but the two schools agreed to play the game in Carson, Calif., this year after being approached by sponsors there. The game will be part of a doubleheader at the Home Depot Center with North Carolina facing Notre Dame in one game and Georgetown meeting Syracuse in the other game.
The Tar Heels will also play in the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Ravens Stadium in Baltimore, Md., with semifinals on April 29 and the championship match on May 1.
Carolina will meet four teams which played in the NCAA Tournament last year -- NCAA finalist Navy on March 5 in Annapolis, NCAA semifinalist Johns Hopkins on April 2 in Chapel Hill, NCAA quarterfinalist Cornell on March 23 in Chapel Hill and NCAA quarterfinalist Maryland on March 26 in College Park.
Carolina was 10-5 a year, posting its third successive winning season under Coach John Haus. Haus took the Tar Heels to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998. Carolina returns 30 of 41 lettermen from last year's team and seven of the 10 starters. Returning All-Americas include first-team attackman Jed Prossner, second-team midfielder Bryant Will, honorable mention goalkeeper Paul Spellman and honorable mention defenseman Stephen McElduff.
