Browning Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Hank Browning won his second straight ACC men's swimming title in the 200-yard free style and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for Feb. 19-25, 2007. A sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio, Browning also was runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle and taking seventh place in the 1650-yard freestyle. Browning repeated as the ACC champion in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:36.43. He improved one spot from last year's ACC meet in the 500-yard freestyle, swimming a career best 4:19.99. Browning was seventh in the 1650 freestyle in 15:16.96. Browning also swam on 800-yard freestyle, 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays which placed third. rowning heroics helped the Tar Heels finish third in the conference championship meet standings with 532.5 points.

LaGrow led a balanced scoring attack in a pair of home victories for the Tar Heels, finishing with two goals, one assist and two draw controls in the 16-4 win over No. 20 Oregon and two goals, one assist and four draw controls in the 17-5 win over Brown.

Shane Walterhoefer turned in two of the most dominating performances in the face-off circle in UNC men's lacrosse history in helping the Tar Heels sweep No. 12 Denver 11-8 and Dartmouth 12-6 this past weekend. Against Denver, Walterhoefer equaled his career high of 16 face-off wins (in 22 attempts) and had six ground balls. That performance equaled the ninth most face-off victories in a game in Tar Heel history but Walterhoefer bettered that effort significantly Sunday against Dartmouth. Walterhoefer won 19 of 21 face-offs against the Big Green. Those 19 wins equaled the second most in a match in UNC history (school record is 22) and he had 13 ground balls, a career high and just two short of the UNC school record. In fact, on only five occasions in Tar Heel history has a player recorded more than 13 ground balls in a game.

For the second straight match, senior Sebastian Guejman clinched a key non-conference victory for the No. 21 Tar Heels as Carolina upset No. 17 Virginia Commonwealth 4-2 in Richmond, Va., on Sunday. With the match in the balance, Guejman defeated Sebastian Deridder of the Rams at No. 4 singles by a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 score. Guejman defeated Deridder 7-5 in the third set tiebreaker. At the time Guejman clinched the match the Tar Heels were ahead 3-2 but they trailed the match on court No. 5 by a 6-4, 2-0 score making Guejman's third-set tiebreaking win a near necessity. It was the third straight year Carolina has upset a higher-ranked VCU team and it was only the 18th home loss for VCU in coach Paul Kostin's 17 seasons as head coach.

Scored 20 points and had seven rebounds in an 83-64 win over NC State and had 22 points, four rebounds and two steals in loss at Maryland.
REID FRONK

Fronk continued his quick start to 2007 with a .438 (7-16) week to lead the Tar Heels to a 4-0 record against UNC Wilmington and Stony Brook. Fronk led the Tar Heels on the week with seven hits, four doubles, seven runs scored and five RBI and also slugged a team-best .875 over the four games. He capped his first career four-hit game with a two-run home run in the Friday win over Stony Brook and also went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the series finale.
On the season Fronk is second on the squad with a .435 average and he leads the team with 13 runs scored in just 23 at-bats. Fronk also leads UNC with a .559 on-base percentage. He has played in 78 straight games dating to the 2005 season.
CHRISTINE NGUYEN

Once again, freshman Nguyen was the top performer for the Tar Heels at last Friday's meet at the University of Alabama.In addition to her second place tie in the all-around with a score of 39.350, Nyugen tied for second on vault (9.875), tied for first place on beam (9.850), and placed fifth on floor exercise (9.850). Competing in front of a large crowd, and facing one of the top teams in the nation, the University of North Carolina gymnastics team scored a total of 194.800 to capture second place at Friday's meet. Host team University of Alabama won the meet with a score of 196.650.
