THE BASICS OF THE MATCHUP: The Tar Heels enter the game ranked No. 6 in the USILA coaches poll and No. 8 in the Inside Lacrosse Nike media poll. Dartmouth is unranked. UNC is 5-2 after seeing a four-game winning streak halfted by the Blue Devils last Thursday. UNC opened with a win over Robert Morris 14-11 before losing at Ohio State 13-8. A four-game winning streak followed with a come-from-behind win over Navy 10-8, a 13-9 victory over UMBC, a decisive 12-6 win over #9 Penn and a 9-5 victory at #7 Princeton. The Heels then dropped their ACC opener to Duke 14-9. Dartmouth is 3-2 on the season. The Big Green fell to Colgate in its season opener in Hanover, N.H. before going on a three-game winning streak. Dartmouth headed to the Tar Heel State for a two-game stretch this week and fell at Duke 18-10 on Sunday. THE ALL-TIME SERIES WITH THE BIG GREEN: North Carolina leads the all-time series against the Big Green 7-3 dating back to the initial game in the 1952 season. Dartmouth won three in a row against Carolina in the 1952-53-54 season but Carolina has won the last seven meetings beginning in 1972. This will be the third meeting between the two teams in Chapel Hill since 2007. Carolina beat the Big Green 12-6 at Fetzer Field in 2007 and then won again a little over a year ago, beating Dartmouth 15-6 at Fetzer Field on March 19, 2010.
LAST SEASON VERSUS DARTMOUTH: North Carolina defeated Dartmouth 15-6 in last year's match between the two teams on March 19, 2010 at Fetzer Field. With the win the Tar Heels started the 2010 campaign with an 8-0 record. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of the first quarter before the Tar Heels outscored the Big Green 11-2 in the second and third quarters. A goal by Mark Staines off an assist by Logan Corey gave the Tar Heels a 12-3 lead with 33 seconds left in the third quarter. The two teams split six goals in the fourth quarter. Sean DeLaney had three goals and two assists in the game to move past the 100-point barrier for his career. Gavin Petracca (3 goals, 1 assist) and Jimmy Dunster (2 goals, 2 assists) both had four point games for UNC. Carolina's offense clicked with efficiency as 12 of the 15 goals in the game were assisted. Josh Etzion and Ari Sussman each had three points to lead the Dartmouth offense. The Tar Heels outshot the Big Green 43-22 and had a 35-21 advantage in ground balls. UNC also dominated the face-off X by winning 16 of 25 draws. Michael Burns won 10 of 14 face-offs in the game for the Heels.
