Peacock Named Tar Heel Performer of the Week

Stephanie Peacock of the UNC women's swimming team has been named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for February 13-19, 2012 after she was named the Most Valuable Swimmer at the 2012 ACC Championships, the first UNC swimmer to win the award since Chrissy Miller in 1998.

Peacock won three individual events at the ACC Championships, taking home titles in the 200-yard, 500-yard and 1650-yard freestyles. She set the ACC record in the 1650 free in 15:46.12 and won Most Valuable Swimmer honors at the meet. Peacock was the first Tar Heel to win ACC MVP honors since Chrissy Miller in 1998. Peacock had two NCAA automatic qualifying times and including relay swims she earned three golds, a silver and a bronze during the meet. She also set a pair of ACC Championship meet records.

arnes led all scorers in both of Carolina's wins, a 73-64 triumph at Miami and a 74-52 win over Clemson. Barnes had 23 points, six rebounds and two assists at Miami, scoring 14 of his points in the second half as the Tar Heels rallied from a nine-point deficit to win. He had a game-high 24 points and added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals against Clemson.

R.G. Keenan continued his assault on the UNC record book as he won 16 of 18 face-offs and scooped up five ground balls to lead UNC to an 18-8 win over Detroit. Keenan's 88.9 percentage was his top game in history (previous was 18 of 21 versus Dartmouth on 3-22-2011 for a percentage of 85.7). Keenan's work at the X allowed UNC to dominate possession as Carolina built a 15-5 lead before Keenan retired for the day with three minutes left in the third quarter. Keenan's 88.9 percentage in the game was a school record for a game in which a player took at least 15 face-offs. The previous record was 88.4 percent by Shane Walterhoefer who won 23 of 26 faceoffs against Ohio State on April 12, 2008.

Friend compiled seven goals and one assist in a pair of Tar Heel road wins at Liberty and Richmond last week. In Wednesday's 19-3 at Liberty, Friend finished with four goals and one assist. In Sunday's 17-6 win at Liberty, she scored three goals in five shot attempts, including the game-winning goal.

Sophomore Sandi Morris broke her own school indoor record Saturday to lead North Carolina at the Gene Anderson Invitational. Morris cleared 13-10 1/2 to win the women's pole vault and improve on her mark of 13-10 from the 2011 indoor season. That height is now tied for No. 10 in the NCAA as Morris and the rest of the Tar Heels head to the ACC Indoor Championships this week. Morris also owns the outdoor school record with a height of 14-1 1/4.

Senior Parker Smith cleared 17-7 3/4 in the men's pole vault Saturday at the Gene Anderson Invitational to record a new personal-best mark in the event. Smith now has the No. 13 height in the NCAA this season in the event.
