Stephanie Peacock, North Carolina, on Winning 1650-Yard Freestyle at 2012 NCAA Championships
On her success compared to last year...
"Swimming the 1650-yard freestyle this year and getting a record is crazy for me. I went 16:40 last year. I knew I had the endurance to keep up more than my 500, but I had no idea that I would be breaking a record."
On when she realized she had a shot at winning...
"At the ACC Championships. When I swam it, I went 15:46. That's when I realized that I actually had a shot at winning at this meet."
On the biggest change in her training...
"The change in my training from last year was doing less yardage. I wasn't doing as much yardage as I had been doing in the past years while I'd been swimming, so I got stronger and was able to keep up in the mile."
On when she knew she would win...
"I saw that (Wendy Trott) was catching me, so I started picking up more. It was about five laps left that I realized that I had a shot at winning it. I was both staying ahead and keeping strong."
On if she knew she'd be that close to the record...
"No, I really didn't. I honestly thought I might be going around the same time as I did at the ACC Championships. I dropped about seven seconds, so I'm really excited about it."
