Peacock Wins Tar Heel Performer of the Week Honors

Stephanie Peacock became the first Tar Heel women's swimmer in nine years to capture an individual NCAA championship as she won the 1650-yard freestyle and placed third in the 500-yard freestyle at the 2012 NCAA Division I Championships. She thus earned Tar Heel Performer of the Week honors for March 12-18, 2012.

Sophomore Stephanie Peacock became the first Tar Heel women's swimmer in nine years to capture an individual NCAA championship as she won the 1650-yard freestyle and placed third in the 500-yard freestyle at the 2012 NCAA Division I Championships. Peacock won the NCAA title in the 1650 in an NCAA record time of 15:38.79, breaking the record held by Janet Evans since 1990. She edged Wendy Trott, a three-time NCAA champion, by .15 a second to win the title. Peacock also broke her own ACC record in the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday when she placed third in that event. She also swam on the 800-yard freestyle relay which placed 14th in the meet.

UNC's gifted point guard led the Tar Heels back to the Sweet 16 again with two brilliant performances in Greensboro. He had double doubles in both games with 11 points and 10 assists versus Vermont and 18 points and 11 assists against Creighton.

Senior Joey Burkhardt went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles over the weekend to lead North Carolina to back-to-back ACC wins over 73rd-ranked Wake Forest 6-1 and 28th-rated NC State 5-2. Burkhardt combined with Jose Hernandez for a pair of doubles wins at #2. He was the only Tar Heel to sweep all of his singles and doubles matches on the weekend. His singles wins came against Adam Lee of Wake Forest 6-4, 7-5 and Austin Powell of NC State 6-1, 6-2.
SEAN SUTTON

Sean Sutton lead the Tar Heels in their first outdoor competition of the season, taking second in the men's 400 with a personal-best time of 47.59 at the Wake Forest Open on Friday. Sutton then teamed with junior Reynaldo Radlin, freshman Javonte Lipsey and sophomore Roy Smith to win the men's 4x400 on Saturday in 3:10.42.

Senior Jacinda Evans won the women's long jump Saturday at the Wake Forest Open in the Tar Heels' first outdoor meet of the season. Evans had a leap of 19-10 1/4 to win the event, jumping more than 15 inches further than the second-place finisher (18-7).

Zimmerman tied her career high with five goals and also tallied an assist and five ground balls in UNC's win at Old Dominion on Sunday. A day earlier, she scored a goal in the Tar Heels' 9-8 loss at No. 15 Georgetown. For the week, she finished with seven points on six goals and an assist and six ground balls as the Tar
