KAZAN, RUSSIA - North Carolina senior swimmer Stephanie Peacock (Cape Coral, Fla.) captured her second medal of the 2013 World University Games Monday, grabbing a silver medal in the 800-meter freestyle event. On Saturday, Peacock had won the gold medal in the 1500-meter freestyle.
Peacock just missed making it double gold for her at the WUG as she touched in 8:28.21, just .12 of second behind gold medalist Martina de Memme of Italy who won with a time of 8:28.09. Two Americans reached the podium as Ashley Steenvoorden of the USA captured bronze in 8:29.71. Steenvoorden had been runner-up to Peacock in Saturday's 1500 meter race.
"We're extremely proud of what Stephanie has accomplished at the World University Games," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. "The amount of racing she has done in the past four days at the meet has been a formidable task and she has excelled at an elite level, winning a gold and a silver for the USA and representing Carolina in a first-class manner. She has one more race ahead and I know her focus in the next 24 hours will be outstanding as she seeks a third medal."
Peacock is the first Tar Heel to win multiple medals at an international swimming event since Whitney Sprague was a double medalist at the 2009 World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia.
Peacock's final race will come in the 400-meter freestyle. Preliminaries for that event begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday (1 a.m. Eastern Time in the USA).
