Carolina Wraps Up Busy Weekend With Wins Over Duke
February 1, 2014 | Swimming & Diving
DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up a successful weekend with a pair of dual meet wins over Duke at the Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion. The UNC men prevailed over the Blue Devils 172-120 while the Tar Heel women won by a score of 157-134.
Carolina finished up a 4-0 weekend with the two victories. Both Tar Heel teams also swept NC State on Friday night. The Tar Heel men, ranked 16th nationally, improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the ACC. The Duke men are 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The UNC women, ranked ninth nationally, is now 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the ACC. Duke is 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the league.
The Tar Heels will close out their dual meet season against the College of Charleston next Saturday at Koury Natatorium. Meet time is 11 a.m.
Erin Purdy and Caty Hulsey each won a pair of individual events to lead the Tar Heel women to victory over the Blue Devils. Purdy captured both diving events just as she did Friday in UNC's win over NC State. Hulsey, a freshman, took both distance freestyle events, taking the top spot in the 500 and 1000 freestyles.
Danielle Siverling and Carly Smith each won an individual event and swam on a winning relay while Ally Hardesty was on both victorious relays for the Tar Heels. Smith won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.48 while setting a Duke pool record mark with that time (previous record was 55.53).
Carolina had a trio of two-event individual winners - Dominick Glavich (200 free, 100 butterfly), Eugene Tee (1000 free, 200 IM) and Patrick Myers (200 butterfly, 200 backstroke). Brad Dillon took first place in the 100 backstroke and swam on both victorious relays. Sophomore Chris Gondek also swam on both winning relay teams for Carolina.
"We set these two meets up to experience what a turnaround would be like at a championship meet. We got two wins out of today although our times were not as fast as we had against Virginia and NC State," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. "We were looking to swim some different events and make sure we were splitting our races right and hitting our relay exchanges well.
"We're eager to get back to work this week and fine tune things and we have a meet next week against the College of Charleston and then head on to the championships at Greensboro later in the month."
