UNC Finishes Up Competition At 2014 NCAA Meet
March 30, 2014 | Swimming & Diving
AUSTIN, TEXAS - Patrick Myers broke his own school record in the 200-yard backstroke and North Carolina's 400-yard freestyle relay posted its best time of the season as competition concluded Saturday at the 2014 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Texas Swimming Center.
The Tar Heels finished 38th as a team in this year's meet with seven points.
Junior Patrick Myers finished 22nd in the 200-yard backstroke with a career best time of 1:42.04. In the process Myers broke his own school record of 1:42.32 which he had set earlier this month at the Yellow Jacket Championship Qualifier in Atlanta.
"Today, Pat Myers reset his UNC school record in the 200-yard backstroke with a tremendous effort and a time of 1:42.04, three tenths faster than his previous school record time," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. "This meet is incredibly fast and we knew it would take a 1:41 to score."
North Carolina sophomore Ben Colley took 20th place in the 200-yard butterfly, clocking a 1:43.69 in the process. Colley set the UNC school record in the event last month at 1:42.19.
"In the 200-yard butterfly, Ben Colley swam a great 150 to 175 yards, but fell short in his bid to score in the top 16," said DeSelm. "Ben has made incredible progress in the past year and will continue to improve.
Carolina's third entry of the day was the 400-yard freestyle relay where UNC just missed a spot in the consolation final, finishing 18th with a time of 2:53.89. That was Carolina's season best time. UNC had gone 2:54.72 at the ACC Championships.
"Our 400-yard freestyle relay was terrific today, swimming our best time of the season," said DeSelm. "Brad Dillon, Logan Heck, Nic Graesser and Sam Lewis combined to go 2:53.89 but we were .49 from getting a lane for the finals."
The splits on the relay were 44.10 for Dillon, 43.50 for Heck, 43.18 for Graesser and 43.11 for Lewis. The leadoff time for Dillon was his career best time for the 100-yard freestyle. His previous best was a 44.72 at last fall's Nike Cup Championships. With that time, Dillon moves into fifth place among the all-time top performers in the 100 free in UNC history.
"Today marked the final day of our seniors' career at North Carolina," said DeSelm. "My staff and I, along with the entire team, want to thank Alex Gianino, Brad Dillon, J.T. Stilley, Kyle Ficker and Bryce Mendes for their tremendous contributions to our program."
