UNC's Peacock Wins Bronze Medal At World University Games

GWANGJU, South Korea – Stephanie Peacock (Cape Coral, Fla.) took third place in the women's 10-kilometer open water race representing Team USA Saturday on the final day of swimming competition at the World University Games in the Jangseong Lake Regatta. Peacock is a 2014 almnus of the University of North Carolina swimming program. At the event,Team USA finishes with 34 medals, 15 gold in Gwangju.
Peacock has won a total of four medals in World University Games competition in her career. She won a bronze in 2011 in Shenzhen, China and a gold and a silver in 2013 in Kazan, Russia.
Peacock finished the 10K distance in 2 hours, 4 minutes, 53.1 seconds, behind Italy's Arianna Bridi (2:03:19.4) and Ilaria Raimondi (2:03:58.9). Team USA's Tristin Baxter (Fresno, Calif.) finished seventh in the event in 2:07:40.6.
"I felt like I had a really good finish so I'm really happy with it," Peacock said. "This opportunity was awesome because I've been to two WUGs before and those were pool swimming, so this was a completely different experience with an awesome venue."
On the men's side, Arthur Frayler (Ambler, Pa.) and Cameron Stitt (Portland, Ore.) represented Team USA in the 10K swim. Frayler placed fourth in 1:55:12.8, while Stitt finished seventh in 1:56:00.1.
As the open water races conclude the swimming portion of the World University Games, Team USA swimmers will bring home a total of 34 medals, including 15 gold, 10 silver and nine bronze from Gwangju.
The World University Games feature 21 different sports and thousands of student-athletes from more than 170 countries. The event was created to celebrate university students and their commitment to education and sport.
Peacock was amongst several Tar Heels who competed in this year's World University Games. Rising junior Jack Nyquist finished 10th in three-meter diving and rising senior Emma Nunn was a semifinalist in the 200-meter butterfly.
Carolina diving coach Abel Sanchez served as the co-head coach for the U.S. men's and women's diving teams at the WUG.
